Slaughter and May has become the latest UK law firm to introduce an extra layer of testing for its future trainees, reports The Lawyer. The mega firm added a written exercise to its selection procedure at the beginning of November when it started interviewing for its 2013 trainee solicitor intake, The Lawyer says. Slaughters’ HR manager for trainees Mel Binks said: “We recruit candidates from a wide variety of backgrounds and disciplines and it can sometimes be difficult to assess their ability to write clearly, concisely and correctly under pressure. It was important to us that we maintained the simplicity of our recruitment process so we developed a short and simple written exercise inhouse.”

Too Many Lawyers Prompts Law Education Review in UK

The UK’s three biggest legal regulators have launched a review of legal education and training because of ‘lawyer oversuppy’. The Lawyer reports that the review by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, the Bar Standards Board and the Institute of Legal Executives Professional Standards will examine routes to qualification and the requirements placed on law schools in light of the likely future shape of the legal market. According to the Law Society, 7,000 people completed the Legal Practice Course (LPC) in 2008, but there are only 6,000 training contracts available this year.

That’s what The Lawyer reports about some black and minority ethnic (BME) lawyers are working for because they failed to land paid training contracts or work after they were made redundant.The UK Law Society said: “Some BME solicitors [are] working for no pay. In today’s society, with wrangles over the minimum wage, it seems incredible that individuals are still prepared to work without remuneration to fulfil their passion to break into the legal profession.”

JK Rowling has been impregnable as a tour-de-fortress until now it seems, with the successful copyright claim brought by Blackstone Chambers Robert Howe, according to a report in The Lawyer. Howe succeeded on behalf of the trustees of the estate of the late Adrian Jacobs in their claim that themes from Jacobs’ 1987 book The Adventures of Willy the Wizard are copied in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which was published in 2000, and allege that Rowling therefore has infringed copyright.

The latest law firm rankings based on gross profits, headcount and profits-per-partner show how hard the recession has hit the Magic Circle and third-tier British firms, which have slipped badly if not right off the rankings. The American Lawyer rankings put the top spots based on revenues to Baker & McKenzie and Skadden Arps, but last year’s leaders – Linklaters and Freshfields – dropped to fourth and sixth place respectively. In fact, six of the top 10 rankings were US firms with the highest profit per partner ranking going to Wachtell, Lipton. As the survey noted, the recession has been an “equal opportunity destroyer of revenue at most of the global 100 firms”.

A New Zealand Lawyer story on the changes to the new quota system introduced to the UK, limits the number of tier-two visas each law firm has available, hampering the ability of Magic Circle – or any other law firm’s – ability to sponsor lawyers beyond the number to which they have been allocated.
