Comeskey, Comeskey
There’s a palpable feeling that the Comeskey drama has not yet played out as the man who lived by the publicity machine was almost consumed by it last week as the imbroglio reached its climax, for the week at least. One of the Comeskey defences was the ‘legal aid rort’, based on allegations of wide ranging abuse of the legal aid system, the self same allegation made in the Bazley report last year and which drew many headlines with the Dame’s references to “backhanders” and “car boot lawyers.” Her report also made many very constructive recommendations and the government acted swiftly in dismantling the dysfunctional LSA. However, the issue of legal aid’s Comeskeyfication with dodgy charge-ups and the like, cannot be laid at the feet of one man alone. Law Society president Jonathan Temm rejected the Comeskey claim and one Auckland barrister told me he believed Dame Margaret should be on “Sensing Murder” for her ability to “sense” corrupt behaviour. There is, however, an element of the Pope’s denial that there are kiddie-fiddling priests about in blanket denials of dodgy behaviour from legal aid lawyers. But, unlike the Church, there’s some reformation under way on the legal aid front. It’s just that Chris Comeskey has put a human face to it.
