I recently tried to get details of those parliamentarians facing legal action from Parliamentary Services, but was politely
refused and told to check with the individual political parties, which I’m doing. However, having dined with Nick Smith a
couple of years ago when he was dealing with the $15 million defamation case brought against him by Osmose New Zealand,
I can understand his relief, financially and emotionally, from having settled the claim. His family, in the crane-hire business,
had wondered why he put himself through the stresses of political life with the corresponding risk of being sued. “I’m
certainly not in it for the money,” he said. Even then his legal fees were a very healthy six figures. Heavy sighs of relief
all around, I’m sure.
