Northern Rock cracked, but Slaughter and May cracked the bigger one with fees of £32.9m, according to a National Audit Office (NAO) report. S&M won the mandate, as if you could forget, for the restructuring of Northern Rock 
back in September 2007. The S&M team, lead by Charles Randell acted on NR, as well as a slew of banks hit by the financial crisis, including RBS, Lloyds TSB and HBOS. Reports the NAO report: the firm “provided high quality advice on the handling of the crisis at Northern Rock, and the firm’s experience was seen as significant if similar problems arose at other banks”.
