Seperatists v. Unionists – the ADLS v. NZLS Debate

revolutionaries 150x150 Seperatists v. Unionists the ADLS v. NZLS DebateNBR’s “Briefcase” notes that there were lots of questions and some vociferous opposition has been raised about the proposed amalgamation and the supposed benefits of an “independent” body like the ADLSi existing, but there is some heavyweight support from many lawyers, including more published comments from David Heaney QC, Miriam Dean QC, Matt Casey QC, DLA Phillips Fox partner John Hannan and Russell McVeagh partners Mike Heron and Derek Nolan who commented that Russell McVeagh did not belong to the ADLSi because of the unnecessary duplication, inefficient use of resources and the perception that Auckland lawyers are somehow different from everyone else.  Whatever the outcome of the vote next week, the long term future for a separate ADLSi in what is still a largely homogeneous profession operating in a small environment has to be limited.  And, after all, separateness and division is so last century.  The separatists need to realise that.
