The Lawyer World Cup – US 1 / NZ 3 | nz law

"nz_lawyer_screaminglawyer"We joke sometimes, through gritted teeth, about the number of lawyers in America, but just hang on to your horses on that one.  In the World Cup of lawyers-to-citizens, New Zealand comes in third, right behind Brazil and the US.  The Law Society had an major inflow of in the second half of last month as the practicing fees were paid up, showing a total of 10,500 lawyers with practicing certificates.  That’s about 500 fewer than last year.  We have one lawyer per 391 people, which is behind only the “over-lawyered” United States (one per 265, with 1.1 million of the little blighters) and Brazil at one in 326.  Next up were:  Spain (one in 395), UK (one in 401), Italy (one in 488), Germany (one in 593) and France (one in 1400).  What does that tell us?  Well, for one thing, we beat Spain, who won the world cup, you may recall.

These figures depend on who is counted as a “lawyer” in each jurisdiction. In New Zealand employees of companies, government departments and so on are allowed to hold practising certificates. In the UK they are not, and I believe not in the US, though that may vary state to state. In the UK one can be a “non-practising barrister” and vote for the General Council of the Bar, so they may or may not be included, but it is a small number compared to the number of non-practising solicitors for whom I do not think there is any such arrangement.
